SUPER EMPTY SPACE BALLS

Finally I'm invited to show work in the legendary De Aanschouw in Rotterdam.

De Aanschouw has been sticking to a public place like a parasite since July 6, 2001; Café De Schouw, Witte de Withstraat, Rotterdam. Every Thursday evening around 9 p.m. a changeover takes place, with artists taking turns exhibiting one work. From various creative disciplines, they give substance to the meaning that this showcase in the public space has for them. The fact that this public space borders a public place is more than a nice bonus. After all; The meeting was, is and remains an important element.

Opening: Thursday 29 February, 21:00
On view for a week

De Aanschouw is now located at Café Hensepeter

LE QUATTRO STAGIONI

Hereby we would like to invite you to the opening of LE QUATTRO STAGIONI on Saturday the 21st of October from 17:00 till 22:00 at FlatbrrGallery in Haarlem.

In the past year I’ve created new work exclusively for the exhibition LE QUATTRO STAGIONI.

The starting point of the work was to bring together different energies translated into colours and flat surfaces, with a spatial experience. In a period of contemplating on where I stand in life, the work shifted to an experimental backwards working method, where the outcome was always a surprise. In the midst of a world that seems to be on fire this way of working provided me comfort and stability.

For the opening of the exhibition longtime friend Niels Geurs will make some nice&fresh pizza’s!

We are looking forward to welcoming you and to celebrate our love for life, art and pizza.

APOTHECA

KOLKATA: RUN IN THE ALLEY

The exhibition 'Kolkata: Run in the Alley' offers a unique vision of the metropolis Kolkata (previously known as Calcutta) in India. The project stems from the art in residence project CARF, which in recent years brought a series of Netherlands-based artists to Kolkata to explore the city under the guidance of Bengal artists. During the work periods, the visiting and Bengal artists befriended each other. In Marres, they make a joint exhibition where they merge techniques, disciplines, and perspectives to create an intensely layered image of the city, in which bamboo scaffolding scenography, dokra-inspired bronze sculptures, cardboard-pulp furniture, accordion books, scrolls, tapestries and drawings are interwoven. Additionally, works by masters such as Binode Bihari Mukherjee, Sarbari Roy Choudhury, Ganesh Haloi, Somnath Hore, as well as historical pieces by the fashion designer Riten Mozumdar are on display. Most the Indian artists are exhibiting in the Netherlands for the first time.

'Kolkata: Run in the Alley' is curated by Praneet Soi and Manuel Klappe.

Participating artists: Nilanjan Bhattacharya, Tim Breukers, Arunima Choudhury, Gautam Choudhury, Sarbari Roy Choudhury, Bonno van Doorn, Sanchayan Ghosh, Nobina Gupta, Ganesh Haloi, Somnath Hore, Henri Jacobs, Manuel Klappe, Maartje Korstanje, Sachi Miyachi, Riten Mozumdar, Benode Behari Mukherjee, Sumantra Mukherjee, Ruchama Noorda, Srikanta Paul, Ganesh Pyne, Piyali Sadhukhan & Saumik Chakraborty, Ushmita Sahu, Amritah Sen, Sarbajit Sen, Paula Sengupta, Praneet Soi, Arthur Stokvis and Koen Taselaar

NO FUN

In Apprentice Master #6, six artists show work in a dialogue with the concept of architect Carl Theodor Sørensen's skrammellegepladser or 'Junk Playgrounds' for children.

These Junk Playgrounds serve as a powerful metaphor for contemporary art practice in their creation and the associated concepts such as free space, risky play and trust in the process.

The group will spent 3 intensive days playing, building and transforming the exhibition spaces of Kunstpodium T into their very own anarchistic Playground.

PREPSHOP/WEBSHOP

On Sunday March 13th, from 15:00 until 18:00, Nieuw Dakota presents performances and disaster exercises by artists Lotje van Lieshout & Bonno van Doorn as part of our current exhibition PREPSHOP/WEBSHOP by Wouter klein Velderman and Arthur Stokvis.

For PREPSHOP/WEBSHOP Lotje van Lieshout makes works of art with dried food packed into them. For now you can still hang the work of art on the wall, but as soon as the apocalypse arrives and you feel a bigger need for food than for art on the wall, you can open the work of art and make the dried ingredients into a meal. During the presentation, she will talk about which ingredients we will eat a lot in a hundred years' time, which have disappeared, what is considered a delicacy and why.

Bonno van Doorn goes back to our ancestors and shows how to make the most important element to increase your chances of survival in nature many times over. He will also serve up a bomb full of antioxidants and vitamin C and there will be a limited mythical woodland drink from his own kitchen for the die hards among us.

HIGH FREQUENCIES OF SPIRIT FORECASTERS

OEHOE BUBO BUBO

I’m super happy and honoured to be able to do a two months residency (Jan & Feb 2022) by the Mondrian Fund in Het Pompgemaal in Den Helder.

During this working period I will do artistic research about the mysterious Ohoe (Bubo Bubo) that lived in Den Helder in the 1970’s. The Oeho was shot in 1981 for unknown reasons and died after surgery in Artis in Amsterdam.

I will definitely keep you posted about the project, mostly through Instagram. If you’d like to pass by, let me know!

NARRATIVES OF NATURE

‘Sofreh’ is a group exhibition curated by Arash Fakhim.

Gijs Assmann, Niko Lee Gail Démoed, Bonno van Doorn, Mischa Doorenweerd, Daan Gielis, Maurice Gobert, Lisette van Hoogenhuyze, Bas van den Hurk, Susanne Khalil Yusef, Anastasia Kiseleva, Gijs van Lith, Hemaseh Manawi Rad, Cengiz Mengüç, Golrokh Nafisi, Ulrike Rehm, Niko Riedinger, Maria Roosen, Andela Vidic and Manon Wertenbroek.

Opening: Saturday 14 December, 17:00 till late
With music by Lora Deniz & Anan Striker

Exhibition: 14 December 2019 - 16 February 2020
Opening times: Tuesday - Sunday, 08:00 - 00:00

For the composition of a group show I went looking for artists to whom I feel connected, be it artistically, in the process or on a spiritual level.

“Traditionally, the Sofreh is a term for an iconic Persian fabric served as the backdrop for seasonal feasts and celebrations. Over time, the term itself has taken on a larger cultural significance: it refers to a gathering, a sharing, a place for family and friends to come together”

In this way I came naturally to a daily used Iranian word; Sofreh. One of the cultural characteristics that I have been able to inherit is the hospitality. In addition, the generosity that I would like to use artistically to furnish the space of NMAG with works by my related artist’s family & friends. An exhibition that generates gathering, using an old traditional cultural signifier.

CALCUTTA ART RESEARCH FOUNDATION

At the moment I am doing a 3 month residency at CARF supported by the Mondriaan Fund. CARF is a new international residency program in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), set up by the Indian-Dutch artist Praneet Soi, from Kolkata. CARF wants to contribute to the cultural development of Kolkata by acting as a platform for a more experimental art practice. CARF wants to develop as an agency that connects the local and the international art community. As in most Indian cities, the differences in wealth and living conditions in Kolkata are constantly visible. But Kolkata is also a friendly city and unlike most cities in India, practically everything is feasible. CARF's main point of departure is the importance of 'making' and the tactility in the visual arts. CARF invites artists and mediators to explore the city, to absorb the history and the local culture of Kolkata and its surroundings and to take experiences with them in their work.

For the occasion of the residency I've started a visual sketch blog at www.doornstruik.nl

HAARLEMSE HERFST

TOURIST CAVE

C&H gallery is proud to present TOURIST CAVE by Bonno van Doorn. The exhibition will present new works by the artist.

The works come from constant attempts to make images that escape the generally ap- plicable classification. They are intentional and accidental results that resist the world of obvious logic and efficiency. Bonno combines these results (sculptures and paintings) in installations, becoming a new and temporary order of things. A world in which it is no longer about escaping but about discovering and finding.

BEYOND THUNDERDOME

Beyond Thunderdome is a post-apocalyptic exhibition set in the remains of monumental architecture. Unfair inhabits the space as a nomadic tribe, adding new meaning to the ruins of yonder. Advertising posters take the place of the painting, scaffolds that of walls and building materials and remains form new occult objects.

Beyond Thunderdome is Part III of Places of Ruin series, hosted by Nest The Hague. The exhibition design is in constant degradation, by the incremental use of different groups of artists. The series is a research on the glorification of impoverishment.

Participating artists: Tim Breukers, Bonno van Doorn, Ricardo van Eyk, Daan Gielis, Jan Hoek, Nasbami, Anika Schwarzlose, Rik Smits, Daniel van Straalen, Thomas Swinkels, Thomas Trum, Joeri Woudstra

THE PAINTED BIRD

In the spring of 2017, Marres will present a spectacular mural about Europe. To create this mural, sixteen national and international artists will paint all galleries and corridors, the stairwell, floors and ceilings of the Marres house. The title is borrowed from Jerzy Kosinski's famous work The Painted Bird, in which a homeless child wanders through the Eastern-European landscape during World War II. Having a surface area of over 750 m2, the painting depicts a series of beautiful and frightening environments: visitors will walk through a high-tech ethnic supermarket to the last surviving piece of primeval forest, from a virtual detention room to a new life festival in the year 2050. The painting encompasses recognizable landscapes, portraits, historic events and fearful dreams.

The painting will be directed by muralist Gijs Frieling. Artist Frank Koolen's contribution to the mural is a comprehensive soundtrack with a personal voice-over, interviews, traffic, chirping birds, music and sound effects. The exhibition will be accompanied by a book with letters from and to the artists and photographs of the paintings, taken by Charlott Markus.

Participating artists: Marie Aly, Cian Yu Bai, Bonno van Doorn, Gijs Frieling, Natasja Kensmil, Klaas Kloosterboer, Mirthe Klück, Frank Koolen, Fiona Lutjenhuis, Jan van de Pavert, Tanja Ritterbex, Sam Samiee, Derk Thijs, Sarah Verbeek, Helen Verhoeven, Evi Vingerling and Job Wouters

LAAT ONS DANSEN

WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU SEE

Ornis A. Gallery proudly presents artists Hanae Wilke, Bonno van Doorn and Jóhanna Kristbjörg Sigurðardóttir, to be seen in the group exhibition What you see is what you see, covering paintings, sculptures, installation and film.

What these artists have in common is their desire for setting up a new environment, a vacuum if you will, in which the beholder is strongly encouraged to perceive the artworks from a blank slate perspective. However, we should not regard this as being a purely formalist manifestation, for all three artists are everything but merely interested in the formation and composition of colour and form. The coming about of divergent mental states in relation to the physical presence of their artworks is just as important.

120 MINUTES

120 Minutes is a performative sculpture that will be presented at Art Brussels 2015 in the shape of an exhibition project created by the artists Frank Koolen and Lieven Segers. It features: 2 small exhibition spaces, 36 solo exhibitions, 36 openings, 18 Dutch artists, 18 Belgian artists, 1 Dutch and 1 Flemish curator.

One space, curated by Lieven Segers, only shows works of Belgian artists and the other space will show works of Dutch artists selected by Frank Koolen.

The exhibitions in the two spaces will not run parallel. Every hour of the total length of Art Brussels another solo exhibition opens. If there is an opening and exhibition in one space the exhibition in the other space is deconstructed and a new one is created. Every artist has got 120 minutes to build up, to have an opening and exhibition and to break it back down. The order of the artists is picked by lottery.

THE MIRROR AND LAMP SHOW

This spring 'Suns and Stars Exhibitions' will stay at the historic country house Jagtlust. The house, the garden and the former inhabitants are imbued with the Romantic principles. The ideological values of the present owner, Natuurmonumenten, are also derived from Romanticism. The title of the exhibition refers to M.H. Abrams’ book about Romantic Theory and the Critical Tradition. “Until the Romantic era, the mind was like a mirror, reflecting the real world. For the Romantics it was more like a lamp, the light of the artists inner soul poured out to illuminate the world”. Here lies the origin of the conflict caused by Romantic notions of authenticity and artistic genius.

Participating artists: Tim Breukers, Ruth van Beek, Caro Bensca, José Miguel Biscaya, Bonno van Doorn, Eli Content, Sibylle Eimermacher, Berndnaut Smilde, Rozemarijn Westerink, Paul de Reus, Richtje Reinsma, Pieter Jan Kerstens, Merijn Bolink, Maartje Folkeringa, Lotte Geeven, Ellen Mandemaker, Linda Nieuwstad, Daniëlle van Ark, Annegret Kellner, Sjoerd Tim, Eva Spierenburg, Gijs Frieling, Roosmarijn Schoonewelle, Ralph de Jongh, Hanna Mattes, Ionika Aalders, Charlott Markus, Lisa Couwenbergh, Micho Dimitrov, Martijn Hesseling, Reinier Lagendijk, Sander van Deurzen, Petra Noordkamp, Antoinette Nausikaä and Lucas Lenglet.

HIJACKING KARMA #2.1

ORDER & CHAOS

The artists in Order & Chaos rely upon their intuition and allow images to come into being without any predetermined plan. They display what looks like a moment of chaos in the sharply defined, computer-controlled age we live in. In a large total installation at Garage Rotterdam, together they reflect a new reality: a shadow world that appeals in particular to our sense of whether something is ‘right.’

OBVIOUSLY

1646 is filled with debris and traces of a whirlwind that Bonno van Doorn left behind.

Some materials that occupy the room seem to have ended up here by accident, or appear to have casually come into existence as some sort of by-product. Others look like attempts at an object with a proper identity but that were never quite realised.

A painting has a particular nonchalance, appearing as though it has been made by chance, through testing a pen or a paint colour. Amongst all this are objects staged on a pedestal as proper art objects, yet they lose their familiarity in connection to their surroundings.

In the end everything escapes identification. Each item is a fragment, provisional, pointing elsewhere. Walking around this environment one encounters the constant surprise of a failed recognition.
